Welcome to the Philly Being and Time Wiki

This is a wiki dedicated to an informal weekly reading group which will meet in the coming months to discuss Heidegger's work, Being and Time.  We meet at whatever time Luke and Aaron decide on meeting.

The goal here is to lightly detail some of our discussion so that:

1. Others who can't make our live discussions can participate.

2. We can carry on extra revision and commentary during the week if we'd like.

Reading for the first meeting (Sept. 15): Introduction I.  (~21-32 in M-R) Notes 1

Reading for the second meeting: Pgs. 36-55 Notes 2

Reading for the third meeting: Pgs. 48-end of Intro II. Notes 3

Reading for the fourth meeting: Pgs 67-77.

Reading for the fifth meeting: Section 2 pgs 78-90.

Sixth: Worldhood of the World 15+16

Seventh: Worldhood of the world 17+18

Eighth: Worldhood of the world up to B (critique of Descartes)

Ninth: WW B

Tenth: WW C

...

Currently:  Being-in as Such

Yes, the translation is by L. Macquarrie and E. Robinson. There is a new paperback edition available, too.

Sorry Guys, but I'm not finding the time to keep up with notes.

Is or will there be interest in addressing secondary literature? T. Sheehan makes a good case that Heidegger cannot be read (today at least) w/o respect to his later political involvement and the volume 'Heidegger Controversy' contains an interesting sampling of Heidegger's political writings, which was later the subject of another controversy regarding an essay attempting to contextualize Heidegger by Derrida which was eventually removed from the volume at the request of Derrida's and replace by a polemical essay targeted at Derrida's attempted 'justification' of Heidegger.

I'd be more than happy to summarize any of the essays and do additional research regarding these disputes if it is of interest.

It's certainly of interest to me, but given the little time I have to devote to it, it would be more like you lecturing me on these matters. If you're OK with that bring it on. I'd love to hear summaries of those findings. I've always considered H's politics to be something that "got away from him" somehow, but haven't really looked into it in earnest.

For a status update: we're currently on hiatus from actually meeting for the holidays. We'll start meeting again in January for our regular discussions. We're having a good time taking as long as we need to.

We've had some issues at the beginning of the semester, but now we're meeting regularly but moving slowly hoping to finish Division I by the end of the semester.
